ABOUT LOIS
Hi, I'm LOIS AKURANG
About Me
I’m Lois Akurang, a public health professional, fitness and wellness expert, entrepreneur, and advocate for healthier, more active communities.
My work sits at the intersection of public health, physical activity, wellness, education, and community engagement. I believe health is about much more than what happens inside a gym. It is shaped by the habits we build, the environments we live in, the knowledge we have access to, and the communities we create around us.
My academic background has given me a strong foundation for understanding health from both an individual and population perspective. I hold a Master of Public Health, a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and Health Science, and a minor in Psychology. Together, these areas of study have shaped the way I approach wellness; combining an understanding of the human body and physical activity with public health, psychology, behaviour change, and health promotion.
My career in fitness began through personal training, where I had the opportunity to work directly with individuals to help them become stronger, more active, and more confident in their health. That experience taught me something important: people don't simply need information about health, they need practical, sustainable ways to put that information into their everyday lives.
Over time, my work expanded beyond one-on-one training. I began creating opportunities for people to experience fitness and wellness together, and that vision eventually led me to build FitFest Ottawa, a large scale fitness and wellness festival that brought hundreds of people together through movement, education, and community. Building FitFest showed me the power of creating spaces where health feels accessible, engaging, and communal rather than intimidating or exclusive.
That same commitment to health education has led me into public speaking and media, where I have had the opportunity to speak about health, fitness, wellness, and initiatives I have created. I have been invited to appear on CTV News Ottawa twice to discuss my work and health related initiatives and worked with incredible association such as the Toronto Youth Boared.
Today, I bring all of these experiences together in the work I do. Whether I am training an individual, speaking to an audience, developing wellness programming, working with a community, or creating a new initiative, my goal is the same: to make health and wellness more practical, engaging, and accessible to the people I serve.
I’m particularly passionate about creating programming that meets people where they are. That can mean helping someone take their first steps toward a healthier lifestyle, creating meaningful movement opportunities for older adults, bringing wellness into the workplace, educating a community about healthy living, or inspiring people through a speaking engagement or event.
I also believe strongly in the importance of education and empowerment. My goal is never simply to tell people what to do. I want people to understand the why behind their health, develop the knowledge and confidence to make informed choices, and ultimately feel equipped to continue their progress beyond my involvement.
As my work continues to grow, I’m committed to bringing together my background in public health, kinesiology, psychology, fitness, entrepreneurship, and community engagement to create meaningful health and wellness experiences for individuals and organizations.
I believe healthier communities are built when people have the knowledge, support, and opportunities to move, learn, connect, and thrive.
